IAHD Training

The International Association for Handicapped Divers (IAHD) is a diving association, which has focused upon providing the means for those with Physical disabilities who wish to become Scuba Divers.


To enable individuals with serious physical disabilites to participate in underwater activities requires competent instructors, underwater guides, capable dive buddies, as well as training programmes, standards, guidelines, materials and member support. This is provided by the IAHD.


Multi level Certification

The IAHD uses a multi level certification system. The safety of the diver and other divers around him are the main focus. The instructor will make a decision during training.

International Association for Handicapped Divers

Level 1

Diver may dive with any other certified diver.


Level 2

Diver must dive with 2 adult certified divers of whom at least one has completed the IAHD Partners training.


Level 3

Diver must dive with 3 adult certified divers of whom at least one has completed the IAHD Dive Leader Training or Pro Training.

Courses and Programmes available


The Confined Water Programme

Confined water training is a certification for use in the pool only.This certification is for those who enjoy the exercise and fun whilst Scuba Diving but have no desire to explore the open water.

The IAHD Open water Course

The open water diver course provided the elemetary knowledge and skills required to safely dive in an open-water enviroment. This implies that you must show comptence in the academic and water skills requirement before becoming certified. Upon completion of the course you receive the Open Water certification based on your level of dependancy and your ability to assist your fellow divers.


Course prerequisites:


  • Minimum age by course start is 12 years.
  • You must also submit a medical approval for diving.

Multi level certification applies.


The IAHD Advanced Open Water Course

During the advanced Open Water Diver Course an Open water diver will learn more diving skills. The course focuses on open water dives and only short sessions of acedemics. A minimum of 5 dives is required before certification. There are no compusory dives. Together with your instructor you can make your own programme.


Course prerequisites:


  • Minimum age by couse starts is 12 years.
  • Be certified as an open water diver.
  • You must also submit a medical approval for diving.

Multi level certification applies.


The IAHD Dive Partner Course

The dive Partner is a certified diver that has been specially trained in how to dive with a physically disabled diver. You get first hand experience in understanding some of the problems encountered by disabled divers. The training also enables you in becoming an efficient diving assistant.


Course prerequisites:


  • Minimum age by course start is 16 years.
  • Certified in diving by an international recognised diver training organisation and show proof of a minmum of 20 logged dives with experience in navigation and night diving.
  • You must also have completed training in Rescue diving.
  • You must also have completed training in First Aid and CPR.

Pro Training

Course Prerequisites:


  • Be a renewed PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (or higher level) or equivalent with a recognized diver training organization.
  • Have a current medical certificate signed by a doctor within the last 12 months.
  • Submit proof of training in First Aid / CPR , such as EFR, within the past twenty four months.

A certified IAHD Instructor in active teaching status is qualified to:


  • Conduct the IAHD Scuba Diving Experience program.
  • Conduct the IAHD Confined Water Diver course and issue certifications.
  • Conduct the IAHD Open Water Diver course and issue certifications.
  • Conduct the IAHD Advanced Open Water Diver course and issue certifications.
  • Conduct the IAHD Dive Partner course and issue certifications.
  • Conduct the IAHD Dive Leader course and issue certifications.
  • Conduct the IAHD Surface Support Specialist Program and issue certifications.
  • Conduct any new non-professional programs developed by the IAHD.
  • Act as certified Pro member to dive with level 2 and 3 divers.
